It has been nearly three decades since the Sukh Ram telecom equipment scandal first made headlines. The case, which began in 1996, centered on allegations that Sukh Ram, a former Cabinet minister in the Indian government, had accepted bribes in exchange for awarding contracts to favored companies. 

Sukh Ram was forced to resign from his position as telecommunications minister, and he was later arrested and charged with corruption. The trial lasted for several years, and Sukh Ram was eventually convicted and sentenced to prison.

Who was involved in the scandal? 

The scandal revolved around then-Telecommunications Minister Sukh Ram awarding contracts to favored companies in return for kickbacks. 

At the center of the scandal was Sukh Ram, who was Telecommunications Minister from 1992 to 1996. Ram was a member of the Congress Party and was seen as a close ally of then-Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao. Ram was accused of awarding contracts to favored companies in return for kickbacks. 

Also caught up in the scandal were several powerful bureaucrats and business leaders, who were accused of playing a role in the kickback scheme. The scandal led to the collapse of the government of Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao, and Sukh Ram were ultimately convicted and sent to prison. 

Evidence that was uncovered during the investigation. 

The scandal erupted when the CBI searched Ram’s offices and homes and found over Rs. 1 crore in cash. They also found ledgers detailing payments made to Ram by companies that had received telecom contracts. Based on this evidence, the CBI charged Ram with accepting kickbacks totaling over Rs. 3 crore. 

During the investigation, it also came to light that Ram had helped one of the companies involved in the scandal, to get a contract for the supply of telecom equipment. In return, companies had given Ram a 5% cut of the contract value. 

The scandal led to a major shake-up in the Indian telecom industry and sullied the reputation of the Congress party, which was in power at the time. Ram’s conviction was a major blow to the party and contributed to its defeat in the 1996 general election.

The Aftermath of the Scandal 

Sukh Ram was eventually arrested and charged with corruption. His trial lasted for over a decade, but he was finally convicted in 2006 and sentenced to five years in prison. 

The scandal was a major black mark on the Indian government, and it led to a major shake-up in the country’s telecom sector. It also raised serious questions about the way the government does business.
